The True Meaning of Eternal Life
To many people, the meaning of eternal life seems so basic and foundational that they do not have to think too long before saying something. However, the truth is, most people do not understand the true meaning of eternal life based on how the bible described it.
To some people, it means living forever in heaven instead of hell, but that is not it.
John 3:36 says, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
The reason Jesus came was found in John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Many people believed that the sole aim of salvation is to escape hell. While forgiveness of our sins and our escape from hell is an important part of what Jesus did, there is more to it. He principally removed the sin barrier that existed between man and God.
Jesus’ definition of eternal life was found in John 17:3.
“Eternal life means to know and experience you as the only true God, and to know and experience Jesus Christ, as the Son whom you have sent..” (The Passion Translation)
Eternal life is simply KNOWING God. This definition may be the least anyone would expect. The word ‘knowing’ is the main point in the statement. The same word is found in (Gen. 4:1) “Adam knew Eve, his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain.” This knowing is beyond intellectual knowledge. It is intimacy.
In other words, eternal life is knowing God on an intimate level. God’s plan is for us to be in union or intimacy with him RIGHT NOW!
We know we will be with him forever at his second coming, but he wants us to enjoy heaven on earth. So many people are stuck and satisfied with just receiving forgiveness of sin while others received forgiveness and are expecting his second coming. A major difference between the early church and the present church is that they had an intimate relationship with God so much that it was contagious. And despite the absence of technology in those days, the gospel still spread like wildfire. They experienced horrible situations, but they will not give up their relationship with God because that is the only thing that kept them going.
Apostle Paul said, “ That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his suffering, being made conformable unto his death” (Phil. 3:10).
Do you know that the secret to experiencing a victorious Christian life is still having an intimate relationship with God? This is God’s plan for us.
