AVOIDING SPIRITUAL DILAPIDATION

There is a building I pass by almost every day that has been vacant for over three years due to a court order. Recently, I felt compelled to reflect on something revolutionary regarding the impact of human presence in a building. The house resembles a mansion, but it has become dilapidated in the absence of its occupants.
Human presence is the sustaining energy of a building; our actions and activities such as switching on lights and disposing of waste directly affect its energy. Here’s the revolutionary idea: without God’s manifest presence in a believer’s life, the essence of that life begins to disintegrate. The rate at which a believer’s spiritual life deteriorates is proportional to the degree of God’s presence that is lacking. When you lack the manifest presence of God, your spiritual life tends to decline.
One way to maintain the measure of God’s presence (as stated in Hebrews 13:5) is through a constant awareness of His presence with us, especially during times of solitude. This awareness can be cultivated through consistent and unwavering intimacy with God, which is achieved through daily meditation on His Word and sincere prayer.
In Exodus 33:12-34:9, we find the story of Moses seeking God’s manifest presence. “I beseech You, show me Your glory,” Moses pleaded (Exodus 33:18). God graciously granted his request, hiding Moses in a crevice of the rock and allowing him to glimpse His glory as He passed by.
We are spiritual beings residing in physical bodies, created for fellowship with God. Therefore, we naturally long for His supernatural evidence to manifest in our world. Encountering God through His supernatural presence keeps us alive to Him. This communion with His presence sustains us to live godly lives and empowers us to perform the “greater works” of God.
