Wisdom Cries in the Street
“Does not wisdom cry out, and understanding lift up her voice? She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart.” – Pro 8:1 -5
There are many voices crying in the street. There are overwhelming voices of distraction, confusion, deceit, enticement and falsehood everywhere you turn, be it around you or on social media. All for one purpose – to get your attention, to get your commitment, to get your loyalty and to waylay a simple and unsuspecting soul. Yet wisdom still cries to as many as may care to listen.
Whose voice are you responding to amidst the compelling voices?
Yes, I hear you say the voice of wisdom, but which wisdom?
There is earthly wisdom and there is heavenly wisdom. Let’s see what the difference is.
James 3:13 -17 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
True wisdom is characterized by meekness, humility, sincerity, peace and good character. However, worldly wisdom is full of envy, boasting and selfishness. Wisdom without good character, humility and meekness is not true wisdom. Though the world may call it smartness, it is not true wisdom.
Every other voice aside from the voice of true wisdom speaks of earthly wisdom- how to outsmart others, loftiness and self-aggrandizement.
God is ready to give to whoever will ask him for wisdom Pro 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. Therefore, ask God to give you true wisdom.
But who is this true wisdom that cries in the streets? It is Jesus!
1Co 1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. NIV
He has become for us the wisdom from God. He is crying to you to come to him so that you can find rest for your soul and peace in the midst of turmoil; serenity in this turbulent world; quietness of the soul amidst the overwhelming noise in the world of confusion; freedom from the compelling force of sin to serve the living God.
Wisdom cries to you. Come and find rest for your soul both here and in eternity!
